Sylvia Nasar è nata in Germania ed è cresciuta a New York. Ha studiato letteratura all'Antioch College e ha conseguito un master in economia alla New York University. Ha poi frequentato la scuola di giornalismo della Columbia University.
Giornalista economica che ha fatto parte della redazione di "Fortune" e "U.S. News & World Report", nel 1993, mentre stava scrivendo un articolo di economia per il "New York Times" si è imbattuta nella storia del matematico John Nash ed è rimasta affascinata del geniale scienziato, ammalato di schizofrenia. Comincia così ad indagare la vita di John Nash, scopritore del teorema di equilibrio, considerato un contributo fondamentale per la teoria dei giochi. Sylvia Nasar was born in Germany and grew up in new York. She studied literature at Antioch College and got a master in Economics at New york university. She then attended the Journalism school at Columbia University. An economics journalist who participated in the editing of "Fortune" and "U.S. News & World Report", while she was writing an economics article for the "New York Times" in 1993, she heard about John Nash and was fascinated by the schizophrenic brilliant scientist. She hence starts researching on John Nash's life, who discovered the theorem of equilibrium, considered a fundamental help for the games theories. This is the start of "Il genio dei numeri", a half biography-novel book that when published in 1998 was awarded the prestigious National Book Critics' Circle Award, and was finalist at the Booker Prize of the same year. Popular worldwide for its screen adaptation "A beatiful Mind" with Russell Crowe, winner of numerous Oscars, "Il genio dei numeri" is an international best-seller which made Sylvia Nasar one of the most famous journalists of the United States.
