Nato a Belfast nel 1964, all'età di quindici anni viene abbandonato dai genitori. Lascia Cambridge nel 1985 per dedicarsi completamente alla scrittura. He was born in Belfast. When he was fifteen he left Cambridge to devote himself to writing. His first novel "Ripley Bogle" was acclaimed by the critics as an extraordinary start. "Eureka Street", his third novel, was one of the most important literary cases in the last few years in France, Ireland and Great Britain. He lives with his wife in Paris.
