Ryuichi Sakamoto ha frequentato l'Università di Musica e Belle Arti di Tokio, dove si è laureato in composizione ed ha conseguito un titolo post-laurea focalizzato sulla musica elettronica e sulla musica etnica.
Pubblica il suo primo disco, "Thousand Knives" nel 1978 e nello stesso periodo è membro della Yellow Magic Orchestra con Haruomi Hosono e Yukihiro Takahashi, una band di pop-rock elettronico che riesce a farsi notare con alcuni singoli di successo nel Regno Unito nei tardi anni '70 e produce lavori che avranno influenza sulla scena techno e acid-house dei decenni successivi.
Sakamoto collabora alle produzioni di numerosi artisti britannici e non, specialmente con David Sylvian, intervenendo nella produzione di quasi tutti i suoi album. Tra le altre collaborazioni si annoverano quelle con Iggy Pop, Caetano Veloso, Thomas Dolby, Youssou N'Dour.
Nel 1983 compare nel film di Nagisa Oshima "Furyo" ("Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" nell'originale), co-protagonista insieme a David Bowie. Del film ha scritto anche la colonna sonora ed il tema principale "Forbidden Colours", cantata da David Sylvian, diventa un singolo di successo ed il suo brano più famoso.
Vince l'Oscar nel 1987 con la sua colonna sonora per il film "L'ultimo imperatore" di Bernardo Bertolucci. Tra le altre sue colonne sonore vi sono quelle per "Il piccolo Buddha" di Bertolucci (1993) e per "Tacchi a spillo" di Pedro Almodovar (1992).
A Sakamoto è stata affidata l'orchestrazione della cerimonia di apertura dei Giochi Olimpici del 1992, tenutisi a Barcellona, Spagna.
Nel 1998 l'etnomusicologo italiano Massimo Milano ha pubblicato "Ryuichi Sakamoto. Conversazioni", una collezione di saggi e conversazioni accompagnati da una prefazione della scrittrice Banana Yoshimoto.
Ryuichi Sakamoto attended the University of Music and Fine Arts of Tokyo where he graduated in composition and got a post-graduate degree in electronic music and ethnic music. He releases his first record Thousand Knives in 1978 and during the same time he is a member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, an electronic pop-rock band who succeeds in making a name for itself in the United Kingdom in the late 70's and produced works that would influence the techno and acid house scene of the following years. Sakamoto collaborates in the productions of numerous British and non British artists, especially with Iggy Pop, Caetano Veloso, Thomas Dolby and Youssou Ndour. In 1983 he appears in the film by Nagisa Oshima "Furyo" ("Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence"), co-protagonists together with David Bowie. He wrote the soundtrack and the main theme "Forbidden Colours", sung by David Sylvian, which became a very successful single and his most famous track. In 1987 he won the Oscar Prize with the soundtrack for "The Last Emperor" by Bernardo Bertolucci. Amongst his other soundtracks are that for "The Little Buddha" by Bertolucci (1993) and for "Tacones lejanos" by Pedro Almodovar (1992). Sakamoto was given the task to orchestrate the opening ceremony of the 1992 Olympic Games, held in Barcelona, Spain. In 1998, the Italian ethnomusicologist Massimo Milano published "Ryuichi Sakamoto. Conversazioni", a collection of essays and conversations accompanied by a preface by writer Banana Yoshimoto. Sakamoto in 2002 divorced his wife Akiko Yano, a Japanese pianist and singer with whom he had a very long artistic relationship as well.
