Nato a New York, si è laureato al Jewish Theological Seminary. Dopo essere stato ordinato rabbino, ha servito come cappellano militare durante la guerra di Corea e per molti anni è stato redattore capo della "Jewish Publication Society of America". Con "Danny l'eletto" esordisce nella narrativa ottenendo immediatamente un grande successo ed un pubblico affezionato. Potok colpisce soprattutto per la capacità di dare voce agli immensi silenzi che sorgono tra le persone, nelle famiglie, tra padri e figli. Muore nel 2002.
He was born in New York and graduated at Jewish Theological Seminary. He was ordained a conservative rabbi, he was a military chaplain during the Korea War and for several years he was the editor of the "Jewish Publication Society of America". He made his debut as a writer with "The Chosen", which was a great success. Potok's works strikes for the author's ability to give a voice to the silences among people, in families, between fathers and sons. He died in 2002.
