Nato a Västerås nel 1936, studioso di matematica e filosofia, poeta, saggista, drammaturgo, romanziere fra i più tradotti all'estero, visse a Austin, Texas, dove insegnò Storia del Pensiero Europeo. Esordì giovanissimo e fu subito al centro della vita culturale svedese, spesso coinvolto in polemiche per le sue prese di posizione critiche e provocatorie nei confronti dell'establishment. Nei suoi racconti come nelle poesie si riconosce quella vena fantastica, quel gioco d'erudito che scherza con la propria erudizione, quell'ossessione per il tempo e per l'identità, che l'ha fatto definire come il ¨Borges svedese¨. In Italia ricevette il Premio Agrigento e il Premio Grinzane Cavour. Morì il 3 aprile 2016.
Lars Gustafsson was born in Vasteras, Sweden, in 1936. He is considered the most internationally known Swedish contemporary writer. Alongside his production as a writer and poet, he is also well known as a researcher and essayist, having pursued philosophical studies. He debuts very young and is immediately at the centre of the Swedish cultural world, he is often implicated in controversies due to his provocatory criticisms on the establishment. In his stories and poems you can see the fantasy vein, the scholar who plays with his knowledge, the obsession with time and identity which gave him the name ¨Swedish Borges¨. Now he lives in Austin, Texas, where he teaches History of European Philosophy at University. In Italy he received the Premio Agrigento and Premio Grinzane Cavour awards. His novel "Death of a Beekeeper", published in 1978 and translated into Italian in 1989, greatly contributed to make him one of the Swedish authors most appreciated abroad. He died on 3rd April 2016.
