Alberto Juantorena è una leggenda dello sport del XX secolo. Atleta cubano conosciuto come 'El caballo', classe 1950, inizia la sua carriera sportiva nei campi di basket per poi passare all'atletica grazie alle sue eccellenti doti di velocista. Nel 1972 prende parte alle Olimpiadi di Monaco di Baviera, arrivando alle semifinali dei 400 metri. Per due anni consecutivi vince svariate medaglie d'oro nei 400 metri, sua specialità, sia ai Campionati centroamericani e caraibici di atletica leggera (CAC) che alle Universiadi di Mosca del '73. Nel '75 si aggiudica due medaglie d'argento - 400 metri e staffetta 4×400 metri con Eddy Gutiérrez, Carlos Álvarez, e Dámaso Alfonso - ai Giochi panamericani. L'anno seguente iscrive il suo nome negli annali dello sport grazie a una strabiliante prestazione ai giochi olimpici di Montreal, dove si aggiudica nella stessa edizione la medaglia d'oro dei 400 e degli 800 metri, record a oggi insuperato. Negli 800 metri registra anche il record mondiale di 1:43.50. Nel 1977 trionfa alla prima coppa del mondo di atletica leggera e imposta un altro record negli 800 metri (1:43.44). Dopo altre mirabili prove sportive, si ritira dalle competizioni nei primi anni '80, e ricopre da allora numerosi incarichi presso istituti e federazioni cubane di atletica. Dall'agosto 2015 è vicepresidente della IAAF(International Association of Athletics Federations).
Alberto Juantorena is a 20th century sports legend. A Cuban athlete known as 'El Caballo', born in 1950, started his sports career on the basketball court and then he switched to athletics thanks to his talent as a sprinter. In 1972 he took part in the Munich Olympic Games, qualifying for the 400m semifinals. He won several gold medals on the 400 m, his specialty, both at CAC, Central American and Caribbean Championships and at Moscow Universiad in 1973. In 1975 he was awarded two silver medals - 400 mt and 4x400 mt relay with Eddy Gutiérrez, Carlos Álvarez and Dámaso Alfonso - at the Pan American games. The next year, in Montreal, he went down in history by winning the gold medal both in the 400 and 800 mt with a record unbeaten to this day. In the 800 mt he marked the world record of 1:43.50. In 1977, he triumphed at the first athletics world cup and marks another record in the 800 mt (1:43.44). After three more sports successes, he retired from the competing world in the early '80's and since then he has been given various appointments at Cuban athletics federations. Since 2012, he has been a member of IAAF Hall of Fame.
