«Da bambina avrei voluto essere una santa, una giornalista e un cowboy. Non sono diventata una santa ma ho sposato un cowboy e a volte ho scritto sul Boston Globe». Attrice e scrittrice di origini italiane, nasce in una cittadina a poche miglia da Boston e trascorre la propria infanzia in una comunità di immigrati di San Donato in Comino, formandosi in una scuola cattolica. Nel 1983 sposa l'attore Chris Cooper, con il quale ha un figlio, Jesse, che morirà a soli diciassette anni. La sua carriera cinematografica inizia nel 1988 con "La sottile linea blu"; di recente ha recitato nei film "Joy" e "I tre marmittoni". Il ruolo chiave della sua carriera resta quello della signora Joanne Moltisanti nella serie televisiva "I Soprano", che la impegna per oltre quattro anni tra il 2002 e il 2007. Nel 2010 pubblica "Jesse: A Mother's Story", in cui racconta la sua difficile esperienza con il figlio disabile: la ricerca di scuole adatte, le continue attenzioni e le sue preoccupazioni. Nel libro, l'autrice non manca di ricostruire la situazione con forte positività e speranza, senza mai lasciare spazio agli utopismi. Lo scrittore statunitense Tom Perrotta lo ha definito «un memoir incandescente, illuminato dall'amore di una madre per il proprio figlio disabile e alimentato da una giusta rabbia per un sistema che fallisce di giorno in giorno nel riconoscere la propria umanità». Pochi anni dopo il tragico evento, l'attrice ha fondato insieme al marito la Jesse Cooper Foundation, un'organizzazione no-profit che si occupa dell'integrazione scolastica e dell'accesso alle attività sportive dei bambini con bisogni speciali.

An actress and author of Italian descent, Leone was born in a small town just a few miles from Boston and she spent her childhood in a community of migrants from San Donato in Comino, attending Catholic school She married the actor Chris Cooper in 1983, and together they had a son Jesse, who died at the age of seventeen. Her film career began in 1988 with "The Thin Blue Line"; she recently starred in the films "Joy" and "I Hate Valentine's Day". Her longest running recurring role is as Joanne Moltisanti in "The Sopranos" from 2002 to 2007. In 2010, she published "Jesse: A Mother's Story", in which she talks about her difficult experiences with her disabled son: searching for suitable schools, the constant attention and worry. In the book, the author never fails to construct the situation with strong sense of positivity and hope, without ever aspiring for utopianism. The American writer Tom Perrotta defined it as «an incandescent memoir, glowing with a mother's love for her disabled son, and fuelled by her righteous anger at a system that failed time and time again to acknowledge his humanity». A few years after the tragic event, she founded the Jesse Cooper Foundation together with her husband, a non-profit organization that deals with educational integration and access to sport activities for children with special needs.
