Duomo, Oratorio
The oratory of the Cathedral overlooks the Canonica of S. Pietro square. This small and picturesque square is located behind the Cathedral, in the labyrinth of lanes and small streets which led to the hidden lakeshore. Only the old «cammino di ronda» (patrol route), today disappeared, separated it from the water. According to the legend the present small area was a big square of the Etrurian Mantua. Until 1550 in this area stood Sant'Agata church and only after it was pulled down was it possible to build the apse of the Cathedral. The present circular wall of the choir of the Cathedral overshadows the architecture of the square: it practically takes over the whole square. This small square can easily be considered as the remains after the abse of the Cathedral was built. Here the atmosphere remained untouched through the centuries: the town changed, but the passing of the years seems to have forgotten the Canonica of S. Pietro square.
