Palazzo Ducale, dimora dei signori di Mantova, è un monumentale complesso situato tra Piazza Sordello e la riva del Lago Inferiore. La «reggia» mantovana è tra le più vaste al mondo, estendendosi su una superficie di circa 34.000 mq. Fu costruita tra il XIII e il XVII secolo e rappresenta quindi, per la sua discontinuità stilistica, ma anche per la sua armonia complessiva, un'autentica particolarità architettonica. Hanno contribuito alla realizzazione i più grandi artisti di ciascun periodo: Bartolino da Novara, Antonio Pisano (il Pisanello), Andrea Mantegna e Giulio Romano. La Sala del Pisanello è ubicata alla sommità della Scala delle Duchesse, in un palazzetto tardogotico perpendicolare al Palazzo del Capitano (Corte Vecchia). Precedentemente era chiamata Sala dei Principi, in quanto ornata da un fregio seicentesco raffigurante la genealogia dei Gonzaga. Questo venne rimosso tra il 1969 e il 1972 per recuperare il sottostante ciclo cavalleresco di Antonio Pisano, detto il Pisanello, il massimo artista tardogotico italiano. Il soggetto dell'opera, realizzata intorno al 1430, si ispira alla materia di Bretagna, e in particolare al ciclo di "Lancelot", assai diffuso nelle corti tardogotiche. L'opera, un dipinto a tecnica mista che abbraccia tutte le pareti della stanza, restò incompiuta. Il restauro iniziò subito dopo il ritrovamento, facilitato anche dal buono stato di conservazione della sinopia.
Palazzo Ducale, i.e the Duke of Mantua's abode is a munumntal cimplex located between Sordello Square and the Lago Infereriore. It could be mentioned as one of widest adobes all over the world (it is almost 34,000 sqare metres wide). It was built between the 13th and the 18th century, thus being, because of its stylistic discontinuity but also of its armony almost a uniqueness in architecture. The greatest artist from each hisrorical period took part to its decoration:Bartolino da Novara, Antonio Pisano (known as "il Pisanello"), Andrea Mantegna and Giulio Romano. Pisanello Room is located above the Duchesses' Room in a small late-gothic style palace perpendicular to the Palazzo del Capitano part of the complex of Palazzo Ducale (Corte Vecchia). It was previously called Princes' Room because it was decorated with a freize showing the Gonzagas' lineage.Betwween 1969 and 1972 this freize was removed to recovera the cycle of frescos byAntonio Pisano called Pisanello (the most important aerist of the Italian late - gothic period) that was lying under it. The dubject of this work, which was paited around 1430, takes inspiration from artistic themes from Brittany (in partocoular the cycles of novels about Lancelot,very popular during late-gothic period. The work, which was painted by using different techniques and embraces every wall in the room was never been fully finished by the maestro.Its restoration began immediatly after it had been discovered and it was relativly easy because the sinopia was in good conditions.
