Peter Carey è nato nel 1943 a Bacchus Marsh, nei dintorni di Melbourne, figlio di un venditore di automobili. Dopo aver studiato alla Geelong Grammar School e dopo aver iniziato, senza però portarli a termine, gli studi di chimica alla Monash University di Melbourne, ha lavorato a lungo in un'agenzia pubblicitaria della sua città, diventando in breve tempo uno dei creativi più famosi e richiesti del suo paese. Nel 1988, grazie al Booker Prize vinto con "Oscar e Lucinda" decide di abbandonare la pubblicità e l'Australia e si trasferisce a New York, dove gli è stata offerta una cattedra di creative writing presso la New York University. Per questa sua scelta di trasferirsi negli Stati Uniti Carey è stato giudicato alla stregua di un traditore delle patrie lettere; malgrado possa essere considerato uno scrittore espatriato, nei suoi libri non ha mai smesso di parlare del suo paese d'origine, anche quando essi erano ambientati in luoghi fantastici. E' autore di raccolte di racconti e di romanzi e da "Oscar e Lucinda" è stato tratto un film, diretto da Gillian Amstrong e interpretato da Ralph Fiennes e Cate Blanchet. Con "Jack Maggs" ha recentemente vinto il prestigioso Commonwealth Prize, suscitando un mare di polemiche non presentandosi alla cena offerta in suo onore dalla Regina Elisabetta. Con il suo ultimo libro "La ballata di Ned Kelly" si è aggiudicato il Booker Prize 2001, battendo il favoritissimo "Espiazione" di Ian McEwan.
Peter Carey was born in 1943 in Baccus Marsh near Melbourne -Victoria. Son of a car dealer, after studying at Geelong Grammar School and after beginning his studies in Chemistry (never accomplished) at Monash University- Melbourne, he worked extensively for a Melbourne advertising agency, and quickly became one of most famous and credited creative minds of his Country. In 1988, thanks to Booker Prize, which he won with "Oscar and Lucinda" he abandons advertising in Australia and moves to New York where he was offered a creative writing teaching post at New York University. Because of his choice to expatriate Carey was considered a traitor; despite that, in his books he has never stopped writing about his home country, even in his fantasy literature. He is the author of tales, anthologies and novels and a movie was adapted from "Oscar and Lucinda" directed by Gillian Amstrong with Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchet. With "Jack Maggs" he has recently won the prestigious Commonwealth Prize, raising a great deal of criticism for not attending the supper offered in his honour by Queen Elisabeth. With his latest book "True History of the Kelly Gang" he won the 2001 Booker Prize, beating the expected winner "Espiazione" by Ian McEwan.
