He is a master of detective and mystery fiction, creating some unforgettable characters such as Matthew Scudder, the melancholic and ex-alcoholic private investigator of Hell's Kitchen, and Bernie Rhodenbarr, an Upper East Side Manhattan Gentleman thief who studies Spinoza and cites from Kipling. During his long literary career, which started 50 years and about 60 novels ago, Block has been the recipient of many prizes: the Edgar Award (three times), the most prestigious detective fiction prize, the Maltese Falcon Award (twice), the Nero Wolfe Award and the Shamus Award (five times). In France he was awarded the title of Grand Maitre du Roman Noir.
