Di origini americane, da sempre ha vissuto e lavorato - come ballerino prima, come coreografo poi - in Europa. Conosciutissimo in Francia e in Belgio, nel 1988 entra a far parte del gruppo belga Plan K/Charleroi Danses di Frédéric Flamand. Il 1991 è l'anno in cui Blumenthal incomincia la sua attività di coreografo con il duetto "Louisiana Breakfast", realizzato con Michèle Noiret. Bisogna aspettare l'anno succesivo per assistere alla prima piece interamente realizzata da lui, "Fishtracks". Negli anni, ha prodotto e realizzato spettacoli che coniugano in modo unico poesia e fluidità di movimento.Tra i tanti lavori, ricordiamo il duetto "Rivermen", l'assolo "Les Entrailles de Narcisse", il passo a tre "Red Cliff", e i due lavori che ha presentato a Mantova: "24 Haikus" e "Les Sentiers d'Ulysse", quest'ultimo ispirato all'Odissea e all'opera di James Joyce.
Coreografo più che moderno, la fama di Blumenthal è dovuta alla sua capacità di legare la danza alle opportunità che le nuove tecnologie possono offrire (immagini,video ecc.).
American born, he has always lived and worked, first as a dancer and then as a choreographer, in Europe. Very well known in Belgium and France, in 1988 he joined the Belgian group Plan K/Charleroi Danses of Frédéric Flamand. In 1991 he started working as a choreographer with the duet "Louisiana Breakfast", staged with Michèle Noiret. It was not until the following year that he produced his first play, "Fishtracks". Over the years, he has produced and staged performances that blend together in a unique manner poetry and smoothness of movement. Amongst other things, noteworthy are the duet "Rivermen", the solo performance "Les Entrailles de Narcisse", and the pas de trois "Red Cliff", and the two performances that he staged in Mantua: "24 Haikus" and "Les Sentiers d'Ulysse" - the latter draws inspiration on the Odyssey and on James Joyce's work. A truly modern choreographer, Blumenthal's fame is due to his ability to combine dancing with the opportunities that new technologies have to offer (images, videos etc.).
