Menna Elfyn scrive in gallese, lingua minoritaria, ma la si può leggere in quasi tutte le lingue europee e in vietnamita, arabo, tamil. Ha scritto poesie, romanzi, pièce teatrali, saggi e libretti d'opera; attualmente insegna scrittura creativa nelle università di Carmarthen e Aberystwyth. Ha realizzato alcuni documentari - spicca per importanza quello sul Vietnam - e dal 1995 collabora al quotidiano gallese "Western Mail". Nel 2002 è stata Poeta Laureato per i Bambini Gallesi, nel 2003 finalista al premio europeo Evelyn Eucelot.
Nella prefazione di "Autobiografia in versi", per ora l'unica sua raccolta tradotta in italiano, si legge: «Menna Elfyn è altruista, di un altruismo religioso che sente a un dato momento il bisogno della politica. E con l'amore della politica, in Menna nasce quello della poesia. Perciò si parla di lei come di un'autrice politica; ma forse sarebbe più corretto dire che la lotta politica è un aspetto del suo altruismo, e che l'amore per i più deboli è prima di tutto un suo modo d'essere, di vivere».
Menna Elfyn writes in Welsh, a minority language, but can be read in almost all the European languages and in Vietnamese, Arabic and Tamil. She has authored poems, novels and pieces for the theatre, essays and librettos. She teaches Creative Writing at Carmarthen and Aberystwyth Universities. She has also produced some documentaries - particualry famous is the one devoted to Vietnam - and since 1995 she has written for the Welsh daily "Western Mail". In 2002 she was appointed Poet Laureate for Welsh Children and short listed for the Evelyn Eucelot European Prize.
The preface to "Autobiografia in versi", her only collection translated in Italian so far, reads : «Menna Elfyn is unselfish, a kind of unselfishness that sometimes needs politics. Her love for politcs led her to her love for poetry. That's why she is considered a political author, but we'd better say that her political engagement is an aspect of her unselfishness which becomes love for the weekest, a way of being and living».
