Sara Fanelli è nata a Firenze nel 1969 e si è formata artisticamente a Londra dove ha frequentato la London Art School, la Camberwell School of Art e il Royal College of Art, dove si è laureata nel 1995.
E' considerata una importante rappresentante della nuova generazione di illustratori sperimentali di libri per l' infanzia.
Ha pubblicato numerosi libri come illustratrice, ma spesso anche come autrice dei testi, rivisitando favole classiche come Pinocchio e Cenerentola o illustrando il mondo della mitologia greca.
Accanto all' attivita' editoriale legata ai libri per bambini Sara Fanelli lavora nel campo dell' illustrazione in generale. Nel 1999 ha disegnato un francobollo per le poste reali inglesi per celebrare l' invenzione della bicicletta.
Ha lavorato per riviste e giornali quali il "New York Times", il "New Yorker", "Il Sole 24 Ore" e il "New Scientist" e ha disegnato copertine di libri per Penguin Books, Random House, Faber and Faber, Bloomsbury e Macmillan.
Ha collaborato con la BBC, Virgin Classics, Issey Miyake, Ron Arad e Alessi.
Per la Tate Modern di Londra, nel 2006, ha disegnato una Timeline dell' arte del XX secolo che ricopre 40 metri di pareti del museo.
Le sue opere sono state esposte in vari musei internazionali, fra i quali il Victoria and Albert Museum e la Tate Modern a Londra, la Galleria d' Arte Moderna di Bologna, la Biblioteca Nacional di Madrid, la Galerie Anatome e L' art à la page a Parigi, il Katonah Art Museum, il Daimaru Museum di Tokyo e il Kyoto Isetan Museum.
Nel 2006 Sara Fanelli è stata la prima donna illustratrice a ricevere l'onorificenza di Honorary Royal Designer for Industry. Ha ricevuto, inoltre, numerosi premi internazionali per le sue illustrazioni e per i suoi libri illustrati (Bologna Ragazzi, Victoria and Albert Museum Illustration Award, D&AD, ecc).
I libri di Sara Fanelli sono tradotti in varie lingue ed esistono in edizione giapponese, cinese e coreana.
Vive e lavora a Londra.
Sara Fanelli is one of the most respected contemporary illustrators. Her research for a personal language to apply to illustrating was carried further in the UK where she got an MA at The Royal College of Art. Here she also experimented extensively with collage that soon became her favourite technique. At 22, while attending her second year at college, she won the Macmillan Prize for a Children's Picturebook, the UK Yearly competition for Art Schools which selects the best children's book proposal. The project with which she won the award was published by ABC in 1994 with the title "Button". The very same book was short listed for the Mother Goose Award and won the National Art Library Illustration Award. "Button" has been followed by eight other books including "My Map Book" ( ABC 1994, reprint Walker Books 2006), "Wolf!" ( Heinemann 1997), "Dear Diary" ( Walker Books 2000, Honourable Mention Bologna Book Fair), "First Flight" (Jonathan Cape 2002), "Mythological Monsters" (Walker Books 2002, Honourable Mention Bologna Book Fair) and "Pinocchio" (Walker Books 2003, winner of the Victoria and Albert Museum Illustration Award).
Sandra Fanelli's books have been translated into several languages including Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Besides being a children's books illustrator, Laura Fanelli also deals with general illustrating. In 1999 she designed a stamp for the Royal Mail to celebrate the bicycle invention. She has worked for newspapers and magazines such as New York Times, Il New Yorker, il Sole 24 Ore and the New Scientist. She has also created front covers for "Penguin Books", "Random House", "Faber and Faber", "Bloomsbury" and "Macmillan". She has collaborated with BBC, Tate, Virgin Classics, Issey Miyake, Ron Arad and Alessi.
She has worked with the Tate Modern in London to create the design of the new exhibition halls opened to the public in Spring 2006.
