Robert Fisk è corrispondente da Beirut, dove risiede da circa venticinque anni, per il quotidiano inglese "The Independent". Secondo il "New York Times" è l'inviato di guerra più famoso al mondo e di certo è quello che ha vinto il maggior numero di riconoscimenti per il suo lavoro. Ha cominciato la sua carriera nei primi anni Settanta a Belfast e in Portogallo come inviato del "Times", per poi trasferirsi definitivamente in Medio Oriente nel 1976. Nei suoi reportage da questa regione ha documentato l'invasione del Libano da parte di Israele (1978-82), la rivoluzione in Iran (1979), la guerra tra Iran e Iraq (1980-88), l'invasione sovietica dell'Afghanistan (1980), il conflitto in Algeria (dal 1992 in poi), le guerre balcaniche negli anni '90, la prima (1990-91) e la seconda guerra del Golfo Persico (2003).
Fisk è inoltre l'unico giornalista occidentale ad avere intervistato Bin Laden - tre volte, tra il 1994 e il 1997 - ed è uno dei pochi a parlare arabo perfettamente. In Italia i suoi articoli sono apparsi su "La Repubblica", "L'Unità" e "Internazionale" e i suoi libri sono bestseller in tutti i continenti.
Per la sua attività giornalistica ha ricevuto tra l'altro l'Overall Media Award di Amnesty International nel 1998, il British International Journalist of the Year Award (7 volte, l'ultima nel 1996), il premio Johns Hopkins SIAS-CIBA per il giornalismo internazionale nel 1996 e l'United Nations Press Award nel 1986.
Robert Fisk is currently "The Independent"'s correspondent from Beirut. According to the "New York Times", he is the world's most famous war correspondent, surely he is the one who has won the most awards for his job. He started his career in the 70s as a correspondent for the "Times", first in Belfast, then in Portugal and in 1976 he moved to the Middle East. While in this region he documented the invasion of Lebanon by Israel (1978-1982), the Iranian revolution (1979), the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1088), the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan (1980), the first Gulf War (1991), the war in Bosnia (1992-96) and the conflict in Algeria (from 1992).
Fisk is also the only Western journalist to have interviewed Bin Laden three times between 1994 and 1997, he is also one of the few to be fluent in Arabic. In Italy, his articles have been published in "la Repubblica", "l'Unità" and "Internazionale", his books are bestsellers the world over.
For his journalistic activity he has won many awards including Overall Media Award by Amnesty International (1998), the British International Journalist of the Year Award (seven times, the last one in 1996), the Johns Hopkins SIAS-CIBA Prize for international journalism (1996) and United Nations Press Award (1986)
