Desai, Kiran

Persona
Kiran Deasi was born in Chandigarh (India) in 1971 and lived in Delhi until she was fourteen years old. After spending a year in the UK, her family moved to Massachusetts (USA). Daughter of the famous Indian writer Anita Deasi, nominated three times for the Man Booker Prize, she studied Creative Writing at Hollins University and at Columbia University in New York. Her first work "Strange Happenings in the Guava Orchard" was published in 1997 in the anthology "Mirrorwork" edited by Salman Rushdie. The following year she published "La mia nuova vita sugli alberi" (My New Life on Trees) which was warmly received by the critics. In 2006, she published "Eredi della sconfitta" (The Defeat's Inheriters) which won her, quite sensationally, the Booker Prize. At thirty-five, she is the youngest writer to have won the pretigious award. In 2006 she was also bestowed the National Book Critics Circle Award. Eredi della sconfitta is considered, both in the USA and the UK, one of the best novels of the post 9/11 era for its analysis of illegal immigration, precarious dwelling and the deep felling of uncertainty which characterizes our time.
