Ha vinto il Somerset Maugham Prize nel 1992. Dopo aver studiato a Oxford si sposta a Brixton dove comincia la sua carriera scrivendo per New Statesman e City Limits. Da allora collabora a varie testate e nel 1986 scrive un importante saggio sull'opera di John Berger. Il suo primo romanzo "The colours of memory" è del 1989 ed è accolto dalla critica come un racconto efficace ed incisivo sulle nuove generazioni. A New York trova l'ispirazione per "Natura morta con custodia di sax" e dopo "In cerca" si trasferisce a Parigi, dove nasce "Paris Tranc"e. Ora vive a Londra, non si sa per quanto ancora.
He studied at Oxford and then moved to Brixton, where he started his career writing for the New Statesman and City Limits. Since then he has been working free-lance for various newspapers. In 1986 he published an important essay on John Berger's work, while his first novel "The colours of memory" came out in 1989 and was acclaimed as one of the most effective and penetrating texts on the new generations. In New York he found inspiration for "Out of Sheer Rage" and after "But Beautiful" he moved to Paris, where he wrote "Paris Trance". He was awarded the Somerset Maugham Prize in1992. He now lives in London, who knows for how long.
