Avraham Burg è un noto uomo politico israeliano. È stato presidente della Knesset, il Parlamento israeliano, dal 1999 al 2003. Ha iniziato la sua carriera militando nel movimento Peace Now, che dal 1978 con il motto «land for peace» si batte per la liberazione dei territori occupati da Israele nel 1967, vista come l'unica azione in grado di innescare un processo di pace duraturo. Ferito nel 1983 durante una manifestazione contro la guerra in Libano, nel 1985 diventa consulente di Shimon Peres per il Dipartimento della Diaspora. Eletto alla Knesset una prima volta nel 1988 e poi nel 1992 nelle fila del partito laburista, nel 1995 diventa presidente della Jewish Agency, occupandosi del recupero dei beni confiscati agli ebrei durante l'Olocausto. Ancora Speaker della Knesset, nel 2003 scrive un provocatorio articolo sul quotidiano inglese "The Guardian" intitolato "The end of Zionism", in cui dichiara ormai improrogabile il ritiro dai Territori. Abbandonata la carriera politica, nel 2007 pubblica "Lenazeach et Hitler" (Sconfiggere Hitler). In questa occasione rilascia un'intervista su "Haaretz", manifestando i suoi timori per la mancata laicizzazione dello Stato di Israele: non uno Stato ebraico ma uno Stato di ebrei è a suo parere l'unica soluzione del conflitto con i palestinesi.
Avraham Burg is a famous Israeli politician. He was President of Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, from 1999 to 2003. At the beginning of his career he actively supported the Peace Now movement that, since 1978, has been fighting for the liberation of the occupied territories by Israel with its motto "land for peace". They consider it the only action able to trigger a peace process for the long term. Wounded in 1983 during a demonstration against the war in Lebanon, in 1985 he became advisor to Shimon Peres for the Diaspora Department. Appointed at Knesset first in 1988 and then in 1992 with the Labour Party, in 1995 he was appointed Chairman of the Jewish Agency and dealt with the goods confiscated to the Jews during the Holocaust. As a speaker at Knesset in 2003, he wrote a controversial article on the English daily "The Guardian" entitled "The End of Zionism", where he declared the urgency of the withdrawal from the territories of vital importance. After giving up his political career, in 2007 he published "Lenazeach et Hitler" (Defeating Hitler). On this occasion he was interviewed on "Haaretz" voicing his fears for the lack of secularization of the State of Israel. According to him, not a Jewish State but a State of Jews is the only solution to the conflict with the Palestinians.
