Curtil, Sophie

Persona
After studying with Arno Stern from 1955 to 1961 at Académie du Jeudi in Paris, and then at Atelier des moins de quinze ans, at Musée des Arts décoratifs and in other children's workshops, Sophie Curtil carried on her artistic studies, 1966 in Paris and in Prague. Then, for nearly ten years, she mainly dealt with etching and dry-point. Since 1985 she has experimented the relation between colours and shapes with big pastel drawings. In 1973, she started teaching by opening a painting workshop for children in Paris. At the same time, she collaborated in the foreshadowing of Atelier des enfants at the Pompidou Centre and she is also an entertainer at Musée national d'art moderne from 1977 to1987. In 1985 she created the book series "L'art en jeu", published by Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris which she runs with Elisabeth Amzallag-Augé. She is currently working for the educational activities service at Pompidou Centre, where she mainly deals with the blind and the partially blind. In 2000, for her commitment to blindness, she received a scholarship from the National Book Centre to devise a series of artistic tactile books for children. Her first title "Ali ou Léo?", 2002 is based on footprints, which goes back to her familiar etching imprinting techniques. Sophie Curtil often participates in training courses for teachers and librarians or in workshop programmes for children.
