Zaü (Esaù)

Persona
André Langevin, known as Zaü (Esaü, the hairy man), born in Rennes in 1943, studied Art and Graphics at Ecole Estienne in Paris. Soon he got involved with children publishing, he illustrated "Nonante et Grospilon", the first album published in 1967 by Ecole des Loisirs, followed two years later by "Rosette et les quarante voleurs". After his publishing debut, Zaü did not deal with illustrating till 1991, but since the late 70's he has written for children magazines and newspapers (for the publishing houses Bayard and Milan). For ten years he worked for Ted Bates Agency, creating ads, and at the same time started working as a self-employed illustrator and graphic designer. His swift and confident strokes are a result of his long and vast experience. While carrying on with his advertising career, he went back to illustrating using different techniques and working for several publishing houses including Nathan, Flammarion, La Farandole, Epigone, Larousse, Hatier, Armand Colin, Casterman, Lo Païs, Syros But he found his ideal creative space within the young publishing house Rue du Monde. An attentive observer of nuances and respectful of diversities, Zaü draws inspiration for his books and illustrations from his numerous travels around the world.
