Maria Nowak è nata in Polonia nel 1935. Diplomata alla London School of Economics, ha lavorato presso l'Agenzia francese per lo sviluppo e la Banca mondiale. Dagli anni Ottanta milita nel microcredito, esportando l'esperienza della Grameen Bank fondata da Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh con numerose iniziative prima in Africa, poi in Francia (suo paese adottivo) - dove fonda l'Associazione per i diritti all'iniziativa economica (Adie) - e infine in Europa centrale. È presidente dell'Aide e della Rete europea di microfinanza.
Maria Nowak was born in Poland in 1935. After getting her diploma for the London School of Economics, she worked for the French Agency for Development and for the World Bank. Since the 1980s, she has been championing micro-credit, exporting the experience of Grameen Bank, founded by Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh, to many places in Africa and in France (her adoptive country) where she founded the Association for the Rights to Economic Enterprise (AIDE), and to Central Europe. She was President of AIDE and of the European Network of Microfinance.
