Alessandro Mendini è architetto, designer, artista e giornalista. Nato a Milano nel 1931, con Branzi e Sottsass è il principale teorico e promotore del rinnovamento del design italiano degli anni Ottanta. Ha diretto le riviste "Casabella", "Modo" e "Domus". Sul suo lavoro e su quello compiuto con lo studio Alchimia sono uscite monografie in varie lingue. Realizza oggetti, mobili, ambienti, pitture, installazioni, architetture e ha al suo attivo la collaborazione con compagnie internazionali come Alessi, Philips, Cartier, Swatch, Hermés. Membro onorario della Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design di Gerusalemme, nel 1979 e nel 1981 è stato insignito del Compasso d'Oro per il design. In Francia è stato nominato Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres; ha inotre ricevuto l'onorificenza dell'Architectural League di New York. Suoi lavori si trovano in vari musei e collezioni private. Nel 1989 ha aperto assieme al fratello Francesco l'Atelier Mendini a Milano, progettando tra l'altro le Fabbriche Alessi a Omegna, la nuova piscina olimpionica a Trieste, alcune stazioni di metropolitana e il restauro della Villa Comunale a Napoli, una torre ad Hiroshima in Giappone, il Museo di Groningen in Olanda, un quartiere a Lugano in Svizzera, il palazzo per gli uffici Madsack ad Hannover e un palazzo Commerciale a Lörrach in Germania.
Alessandro Mendini is an architect, designer, artist, theoretician and journalist and was born in Milan in 1931. With Branzo and Sottrass, he is the main theoretician and promoter of the 80's Italian design renewal. He edited the magazinesi: "Casabella", "Modo" and "Domus". A few essays regarding his work and his collaboration with Studio Alchimia have been published in many languages. He produces objects, furniture, spaces, paintings, installations and architectural structures. He works with international companies such as Alessi, Philips, Cartier, Swatch, Hermés and is an advisor for many Companies in the Far East as well, to solve their image and design related needs. He is Honorary Member of Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. In 1979 and in 1981 he was awarded the Compasso d'Oro (The Gold Compasses) and he is also Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France and received an Honour by the Architectural League in New York. He was a professor of Design at Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. His works are exhibited in several museums and private collections. In 1989, with his brother Francesco, he opened the Atelier Mendini in Milan, he planned Fabbriche Alessi in Omegna, the new Olympic swimming pool in Trieste, a few underground stations and the restoration of Villa Comunale in Naples, a tower in Hiroshima, the Groningen Museum in Holland, a district in Lugano and the Madsack Office building in Hannover and a Businees building in Lörrach - Germany and other buildings in Europe and the US.
