André Schiffrin è nato a Parigi nel 1935, è un editore e saggista newyorkese. Di origini francesi, André è figlio di Jacques Schiffrin, fondatore della Bibliothèque de la Pléiade. Ha vissuto negli Stati Uniti dall'età di cinque anni, quando la sua famiglia, di origini ebraiche, si trasferì nel 1940 a New York per sfuggire alle persecuzioni antisemite. Per trent'anni è stato a capo di un'importante casa editrice statunitense, la Pantheon Books, con cui ha pubblicato, tra gli altri, Michel Foucault, Jean-Paul Sartre, Noam Chomsky, Roy Medvedev. Schiffrin lasciò la casa editrice alla fine degli anni ottanta, in disaccordo con l'orientamento impresso alla linea editoriale. Dal 1991 ha diretto New Press, una casa editrice indipendente che pubblica, in particolare, autori come Noam Chomsky e Eric Hobsbawm. Fervente difensore della piccola editoria, sensibile alle minacce che si profilano sul mondo editoriale, Schiffrin, nelle sue opere, denuncia i fenomeni della globalizzazione che toccano il mondo dell'editoria e dei mass media. Nel 2002 gli è stato conferito il Premio Grinzane Cavour per l'editoria. Muore l'1 dicembre 2013.
Born in Paris in 1935, André Schiffrin was a New York publisher and essayist. André was the son of Jacques Schiffrin, founder of Bibliothèque de la Pléiade. He had lived in the USA since he was 5 when his family of Jewish origin moved to New York in 1940 to escape anti-Semitic persecution. For 30 years he was the director of an important American publishing house, Pantheon Books, which published, among others, Michel Foucault, Jean-Paul Sartre, Noam Chomsky, Roy Medvedev. Schiffrin left in the late 1980s because he was in disagreement with its publishing plans. Since 1991 he had directed The New Press, an independent publishing house that publishes authors such as Noam Chomsky and Eric Hobsbawm. In his works, Schiffrin denounces the effects of globalization on publishing houses and media. In 2002 he was awarded Grinzane Cavour Prize for publishing. He died on 1st December 2013.
