Calligrafo e insegnante, Ewan Clayton è cresciuto nei pressi del villaggio di Ditchling, nella regione del Sussex, che diede i natali anche al celebre tipografo Edward Johnston. I suoi familiari hanno lavorato come tessitori nella Gilda degli artigiani della Ditchling Common, fondata nel 1921 dal designer e stampatore Eric Jill. Ewan fu l'ultimo membro della famiglia ad aderire al Gilda prima che chiudesse i battenti nel 1988. Si è formato come calligrafo all'Istituto Roehampton con Ann Campo, che ha successivamente affiancato nell'attività di insegnamento. Negli anni Ottanta ha vissuto come monaco benedettino a Worth Abbey, sempre nel Sussex. Dopo l'esperienza claustrale è stato assunto come consulente presso il Palo Alto Research Laboratory della Xerox Corporation, una delle più grandi aziende produttrici di stampanti e fotocopiatrici, proprio nel decennio in cui venivano consolidate le basi dell'odierna scrittura elettronica. Attualmente è docente alla Facoltà di arti, design e media dell'Università del Sunderland, dove co-dirige il Centro Internazionale di Ricerca Calligrafica. Per i suoi meriti in campo artigianale ed educativo, nel 2013 è stato nominato Craft Champion alla prima edizione dei National Craft Skills Awards. È membro fiduciario del Crafts Study Centre, del Britain's University Museum for Contemporary Craft e del Pakistan Islamic Arts Institute di Lahore. "Il filo d'oro" è il suo primo libro pubblicato in Italia, un'appassionante storia della scrittura e dei supporti tecnologici che hanno caratterizzato il suo sviluppo, dalla tavoletta di argilla agli schermi pixellati dei moderni computer.
Ewan Clayton is a calligrapher and teacher. He grew up near the village of Ditchling, Sussex, home to the calligrapher Edward Johnston. His family worked as weavers in the Guild of craftsmen on Ditchling Common founded by Eric Gill in 1921. Ewan was the last member to join the Guild before it closed in 1988. He trained as a calligrapher at the Roehampton Institute with Ann Camp and subsequently assisted her with the teaching there. For a few years in the mid 1980s, Ewan lived as a Benedictine monk at Worth Abbey in Sussex. After leaving the monastery, he was hired as a consultant to Xerox's Palo Alto Research Laboratory (PARC). Today Ewan is Professor in Design at the University of Sunderland where he co-directs their International Calligraphy Research Centre. In 2013, he was named Craft Champion of the year for his contribution to educating others in the Crafts in the first National Craft Skills Awards. He is a Trustee of the Crafts Study Centre, Britain's University Museum for contemporary craft and of the Pakistan Islamic Arts Institute, Lahore. He was awarded an MBE in the 2014 New Year's Honours List.
