Tariq Ali, noto e brillante esponente degli Studi Culturali, nonché direttore della rivista «New Left Review», è anche storico, analista politico culturale, romanziere e regista cinematografico. Ha pubblicato alcuni celebri studi sull'islamismo e sui suoi rapporti con le culture occidentali; i suoi romanzi storici, raggruppati sotto l'etichetta di «Islam Quintet», comprendono "Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree", "The Book of Saladin", "The Stone Woman". Risiede a Londra.
Nato nel 1944 a Lahore, città oggi in territorio pakistano, ma che all'epoca faceva parte dei possedimenti britannici in India, ventenne si trasferì in Inghilterra, dove continuò gli studi nel campo della politica, filosofia ed economia, presso l'Exeter College di Oxford. Entrando a far parte della Federazione Laburista Universitaria, fu dapprima membro della commissione del Gruppo Socialista, e in seguito, a partire dal 1965, presidente della Oxford Union. Con la guerra del Vietnam nella sua fase più acuta, Tariq Ali si guadagnò una reputazione di rilievo nazionale partecipando a dibattiti accanto a personaggi come Henry Kissinger o come il Segretario agli Esteri britannico Michael Stewart.
Tutt'oggi dedito a una critica radicale, è sempre stato tra le avanguardie dei movimenti contro la guerra. Sui conflitti in Iraq, Afghanistan e Serbia, Tariq non ha mai mancato di far sentire la sua voce. E' anche un apprezzato autore di programmi radiotelevisivi, attento osservatore dei Paesi in via di sviluppo con il suo Bandung File, trasmesso sul Channel Four. Ha collaborato con Howard Brenton per la realizzazione di opere teatrali, e con Derek Jarman per la realizzazione di un film sulla vita del filosofo Wittgenstein.
Tariq Ali, a famous and talented Cultural Studies leading figure, is also the chief editor of "New Left Review Magazine", a historian a cultural-political analyst, a writer and movie director. He has published some famous studies on Islam and its relationship with Western cultures; his historical novels, collected in «Islam Quintet», include "Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree", "The Book of Saladin", "The Stone Woman".
He was born in 1943 in Lahore (now part of Pakistan, but, at the time, it was a British territory in India), he moved to the UK when he was 20 where he furthered his studies on politics, philosophy and economics at Exeter College in Oxford. He enrolled in the University Labour Federation, at first he was a member of the Socialist Group Committee and then, in 1965, he became the Oxford Union President. When the Vietnam War was at its fiercest, he got himself a good standing at national level taking part in debates together with high-profile figures such as Henry Kissinger or the British Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Michael Stewart.
He is still a radical critic and he has always been at the forefront of antiwar movements. He has always made himself heard about the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Serbia. He is also a respected author of TV programmes, in his "Bandung File", broadcast by Channel Four, he closely observes developing Countries. He has worked with Howard Brenton in theatre pieces and with Derek Jarman on the production of a movie about the life of the philosopher Wittgenstein. He lives in London.
