Word Choice in English Prose
This talk aspires to be an elementary discussion of an elementary act. Prose writers, no less than poets, spend the majority of their time choosing words, thinking better of their choices, and choosing other words: a pedantic, neurotic, wasteful, tormenting practice that is nonetheless the occasion of our most exhilarating joys.

In una conclusiva domenica sera, Salvatore Scibona, insegnante americano di lingua inglese, presenta la sua lezione "On fussing", "Word choose in English prose".
Scibona, sorridente e simpatico, parla al pubbico nella sua lingua madre, anche se ogni tanto, spiegando, dimostra la sua buona padronanza della lingua italiana.
Scibona si sofferma sull'importanza della scrittura, e di come sia determinante la scelta delle parole giuste per la comprensione del testo: «I work in a school of writing, my work I choose the words. When you write something, the reader must understand what you want to say, almost everything».
Continua affermando di essere abbastanza pignolo nel suo lavoro, e stilando una lista di punti importanti per la creazione di un testo comprensibile:
1) the commons: «you must use it, you need to use it»;
2) word/ choose: «the word is that, you know the look like, the sound like »;
3) positive-negative: «you need to see the feeling and the better word in your contest»;
4) redundancy;
5) antecedents;
6) hyperbole: «it's when you are going to engrave in what you want mean».
Le parole ti prendono, ti attaccano, è così che capisci. Quando trovi una parola sbagliata sei tu lettore che vieni a correggerla, come il pubblico di Festivaletteratura, che a questo evento ha partecipato con vivo interesse, interventi e domande attente e pertinenti.
«With clarity of rhythmic structure, grace forms a duality. Together they have a relation like that of body and soul».
Scibona, sorridente e simpatico, parla al pubbico nella sua lingua madre, anche se ogni tanto, spiegando, dimostra la sua buona padronanza della lingua italiana.
