CAPRI REVISITED

Capri was a refuge in antiquity and again in modern times. From Augustus Caesar and Tiberius on, a myth accreted: Capri was where you could be whom you chose to be. Capri was where the hidden self could be released. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, especially, the island acquired its share of strange inhabitants, most in flight from a world that had become too much for them. And the story continues.
