Tibor Fischer è nato da genitori che fecero parte della nazionale di pallacanestro ungherese, fino a quando non emigrarono da Budapest, nel 1956, in seguito all'invasione russa. Tibor è cresciuto a Londra e ha studiato al Peterhouse College di Cambridge, dove si è laureato con una tesi sul linguaggio moderno. Ha svolto numerosi lavori, dal giornalista freelance - attività che lo porta nella capitale ungherese come corrispondente del "Daily Telegraph" - allo sceneggiatore di programmi televisivi per bambini. Nel 1992 pubblica "Sotto il culo della rana" (il titolo deriva da un modo di dire ungherese che vuol dire aver toccato il fondo) e vince il Betty Trask Award. Nel 1993 vince il Premio come miglior scrittore inglese emergente e "Sotto il culo della rana" entra nelle nomination per il Booker Prize. Nel 1994 esce "La gang del pensiero", in cui associa uno stravagante senso dell'umorismo con un particolare gusto del grottesco. Tibor Fischer si dice influenzato dagli scrittori americani che leggeva da ragazzo come Salinger, Robbins, Wolfe e dai fumetti della Marvel Comics. Attualmente vive a Londra, ma spesso torna in Ungheria, dove è rimasta parte della sua famiglia.
His parents played for the Hungarian basketball national team, until 1956, when they left Budapest, following the Russian invasion. Tibor grew up in London and studied at Peterhouse College in Cambridge where he graduated with a dissertation on modern languages. He has had many jobs, from freelance journalist - which took him back to Budapest as correspondent for "The Daily Telegraph", to scriptwriter for TV shows for children. In 1992, he published "Under the frog" (the title stems from a Hungarian saying meaning to touch bottom) with which he won the Betty Trask Award. In 1993, he won a prize as best English emerging writer and "Under the Frog" was short listed for the Booker Prize. In 1994 he published "The Thought Gang", where he combined an eccentric sense of humour with a peculiar taste for the grotesque. Tibor Fischer admits to have been influenced by the American writers that he used to read as a boy such as Salinger, Robbins and Wolfe and by the comics by Marvel Comics. He currently lives in London, but he often goes back to Hungary where part of his family still lives.
