Pete Hamill è nato da genitori immigrati irlandesi, primo di sette figli. Dopo aver lasciato la scuola a sedici anni, si è arruolato nella US-Navy dove ha completato gli studi superiori, in seguito ha studiato presso il Mexico College, il Pratt Institute e la School of Visual Arts. Ha cominciato la sua carriera, come giornalista, nel 1960 presso il "New York Post" e il "Daily News", dei quali è stato anche caporedattore, e il "New York Newsday". Ha commentato le guerre in Vietnam, Nicaragua, Libano e Irlanda. I suoi articoli sono stati pubblicati anche sulle riviste più importanti del Paese, come "Esquire", "New York magazine" e "New York Times"; presso quest'ultima rivista ha lavorato in qualità di editor per venticinque anni. Ha inoltre vissuto a Roma, Barcellona, Città del Messico. Ha vinto numerosi premi giornalistici. Ha scritto nove romanzi e due raccolte di racconti, numerose sceneggiature, ha pubblicato raccolte dei suoi articoli, e altri testi. Due suoi romanzi sono stati dei bestseller: "Drinking Life", un libro di memorie, e "Neve in Agosto" (1997, pubblicato in Italia da Salani nel 1999) pubblicato in diversi paesi. Hamill è membro della Writers Guild of America, del PEN, della Society of Silurians e AFTRA.
Nominato Writer in Residence alla New York University, attualmente vive tra Manhattan e Cuernavaca (Messico) con la moglie giapponese, la giornalista Fukiko Aoki, e le sue due figlie.
Pete Hamill was born to Irish-immigrant parents, the eldest of seven children. When he was sixteen he left school, then he served in the US Navy, he studied at Mexico College, the Pratt Institute and the School of Visual Arts. He started his journalistic career in 1960 at the "New York Post" and the "Daily News" for which he was also Editor-in-Chief, and at the "New York Newsday". He reported from the wars in Vietnam, Nicaragua, Lebanon and Ireland. His articles have also been published in the most prestigious magazines of his Country such as "Esquire", "New York magazine" and "New York Times"; for the latter, he worked as an editor for twenty five years. He has won many prizes for journalism.
He has written nine novels and two collections of short stories, several screenplays, collections of his articles, a book on the relationship between work tools and art, and a book on New York. Two of his novels were best sellers: "Drinking Life", a memoir, and Snow in August" (1997) published in many Countries. Hamill is a member of the Writers Guild of America, of PEN, of the Society of Silurians and AFTRA. He currently lives between Manhattan and Cuernavaca (Mexico) with his Japanese wife, Fukiko Aoki, also a journalist, and his two daughters. He is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University.
