Frank McCourt è nato a Brooklyn nel 1930 da genitori irlandesi. Giovanissimo, torna con la sua famiglia in Irlanda. Trascorre un'infanzia miserabile a Limerick e rientra negli Stati Uniti, dove sopravvive grazie a piccoli e miseri lavoretti. Dopo essersi arruolato nell'esercito americano, comincia gli studi di letteratura che gli apriranno la strada alla professione futura. Diventa, infatti, professore prima alla scuola superiore e poi all'università. Autore esordiente all'età di settant'anni, si è deciso a raccontare la sua infanzia e ascensione sociale nel nuovo mondo, pubblicando i due primi volumi delle sue memorie: "Le ceneri di Angela" nel 1997, dove le ceneri sono quelle del camino con le quali la madre Angela si riscaldava aspettando il ritorno del marito e "Che paese, l'America", apparso per la prima volta nel 1999, che riprende la sua storia autobiografica. "Le ceneri di Angela" gli è valso il premio Pulitzer e il National Critics Award e l'ha consacrato come uno dei più grandi scrittori del Novecento per la rara e originale capacità di raccontare miserie e tristezze con l'occhio ironico e mai privo di speranza di un bambino.

Frank McCourt was born in Brooklyn in 1930 from Irish parents. When he was still very young he returned with his family to Ireland. After a miserable childhood in Limerick he moved back to the States. He survived on little occasional work and then worked for the American Army, before starting his literary studies. He then became Professor at University. He started writing when he was seventy with his first novel "Angela's Ashes", where the ashes are those in the fire with which Angela used to warm up waiting for her husband to come back from the pub where he spent all his money, followed by "'Tis" appeared for the first time in 1999. With "Angela's Ashes" he won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Critics Award and established him as one of the best writers of the twentieth century for his rare and original ability to tell sad and miserable stories from the ironic and hopeful perspective of a child.
He died in 2009.
