Antjie Krog, poetessa e giornalista sudafricana, è nata in una famiglia di scrittori, nel 1952 a Kroonstad, in Sud Africa, dove è cresciuta; nel 1973 si è laureata in inglese alla University of the Orange Free State e successivamente in afrikaans all'università di Pretoria nel 1976. Descritta dal poeta Johan Hambridge come «il Pablo Neruda degli Afrikaans» ha pubblicato il suo primo libro di poesie a soli diciassette anni, divenendo famosa nel suo paese, quando il regime dell'apartheid era al culmine, mettendo in versi il suo amore per il Sudafrica e la protesta per la discriminazione nei confronti dei neri. Molte delle sue poesie parlano d'amore, apartheid e del ruolo delle donne. Nel 1984 fonda, insieme a Hermann Giliomee, il giornale indipendente "Die Suid-Afrikaan". Ha pubblicato otto volumi di poesie ed è diventata una figura nota a livello nazionale ed internazionale per la sua diffusione via radio dei lavori della Commissione per la Verità e la Riconciliazione. Tra il dicembre 1995 e l'estate 1998 infatti la Commissione, voluta da Nelson Mandela e presieduta da Desmond Tutu, ha messo in Sudafrica i carnefici di fronte alle proprie vittime, scongiurando così quel bagno di sangue su cui molti avrebbero giurato all'indomani del crollo del regime razzista. Antjie Krog ne ha trasmesso i lavori alla radio, e ha raccontato in "Terra del mio sangue", due anni di testimonianze crude e di confronti drammatici. Dal libro è stato tratto il film "In My Country" di John Boorman, con Juliette Binoche e Samuel L. Jackson.
Antjie Krog, a poet and journalist from South Africa, was born into a family of writers, at Kroonstad, South Africa, in 1952, where she also grew up; in 1973 she graduated in English at the University of Orange Free State and then in Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria in 1976. Described by poet Johan Hambridge as «Pablo Neruda of South Africans», she published her first poetry book when only 17, becoming famous in her country, when the apartheid regime was at its peak, putting into verses her love for South Africa and her protest against black discrimination. Many of her poems talk about love, apartheid and of the role of women. In 1984, together with Hermann Giliomee, she found the independent paper "Die Suid-Afrikaan". She published eight poetry volumes and became known worldwide and in South Africa for her radio broadcasting of the work of the Committee for Truth and Reconciliation. Between December 1995 and Summer 1998, the Committee, conceived by Nelson Mandela and chaired by Desmond Tutu, she managed to put the tormentors face to face with their victims in South Africa, thus averting that bloodbath that many people thought would occur after the racial regime's demise. Antje Krog was a member of the committee, of which she broadcast the work on the radio, and wrote about two years of crude testimonies and dramatic events in "Country of My Skull". The film "In My Country" by John Boorman is an adaptation of that book, with Juliette Binoche and Samuel L. Jackson.
