Wael Abbas, nato a Il Cairo nel 1974, è un giornalista ed attivista egiziano, autore del pluripremiato blog www.misrdigital.blogspirit.com, in cui ha più volte denunciato la violenza e la brutalità della polizia egiziana. Nonostante la chiusura dei suoi account Yahoo e Youtube (poi riaperto), Abbas ha continuato a farsi portavoce della difesa dei diritti umani, attraverso il blog e numerose interviste. Vincitore nel 2007 del Knight International Journalism Award e nel 2008 dell'Human Rights Watch's Hellman/Hammett Award, Abbas è stato nominato dalla BBC fra le Most Influential Person del 2006, mentre nel 2007 la CNN lo ha definito Middle East Person of The Year; nel 2005/2006 ha inoltre vinto l'Egyptian Against Corruption Award.

Although his Yahoo and YouTube accouts were closed (now reopened), Abbas continued to be the spokesman for the protection of the human rights, expressing himself in his blog and numerous interviews. Winner of the 2007 Knight International Journalism Award and the 2008 Human Rights Watch's Hellman/Hammett Award. Abbas was nominated by the BBC as one of the Most Influential Persons 2006, and in 2007 CNN selected him as the Middle East Person of The Year; furthermore he was awarded the Egyptian Against Corruption Award 2005/2006.
