Sam Kean ha studiato fisica e inglese in Minnesota. Ha insegnato per alcuni anni in una scuola sperimentale a St. Paul. Trasferitosi a Washington ha iniziato la sua carriera di scrittore e divulgatore scientifico. Attualmente lavora come reporter ed editorialista per la rivista "Science". Le sue pubblicazioni, molto apprezzate per essere riuscite ad armonizzare divertimento e rigore scientifico, sono apparse sul "The New York Times Magazine", su "Mental Floss", "Slate", "The Believer", "Air & Space Science" e "The New Scientist". His best-seller "Il cucchiaino scomparso" was described by the "New York Times" as a «thrilling tour of the table of elements, endowed with the brightness of raw sodium fallen into a glass of water». In 2010 the Royal Society chose it as one of the best science books of the year.
