Nata a Lahore, Alvi si è trasferita ancora neonata con la famiglia in Inghilterra. Ha studiato nelle università di York e Londra e per anni è stata docente nelle scuole superiori. Attualmente vive a Norfolk ed è tutor presso la Poetry School. Nel 1991 esce il suo primo libro di poesie, "Peacock Luggage", dove le sue opere degli esordi figurano accanto a quelle del collega Peter Daniels, insignito insieme a lei del Poetry Business Prize. Da allora ha pubblicato otto raccolte, tre delle quali ("The Country at My Shoulder", 1993; "Europa", 2008; e "At the Time of Partition", 2013), sono entrate nella shortlist del T.S. Eliot Prize. Nel 2002 ha ricevuto il prestigioso Cholmondeley Award, confermandosi una delle voci più interessanti della poesia inglese contemporanea.
According to Pietro De Andrea, «the poetry of Anglo-Pakistani poet Moniza Alvi is characterized by the presence of 'another' culture which is both a burden and a source of inspiration. However, this post-colonial aspect is just a small detail of a surprising composition, starting with the originality of its images». Born in Lahore, Alvi moved to England she was still a baby. She studied at York and London universities. She now live in Norfolk where she is a tutor at Poetry School.
