Kevin Brooks è nato e cresciuto a Exeter, in Gran Bretagna. Terminata la scuola si è trasferito a Londra per cercare di diventare una rock star. Dopo aver lavorato in uno zoo, dietro a una pompa di benzina e a un bancone di hot dog, in un forno crematorio e in un ufficio postale, ha cominciato a fare quello che gli riusciva meglio: scrivere libri per ragazzi. Attualmente vive nello Yorkshire ed è uno dei più creativi autori inglesi degli anni Duemila, capace di intessere fiabe e racconti neri che hanno già la statura dei classici. "Lucas" e "Martyn Pig", nel 2002, segnano la sua affermazione nel mondo editoriale, mentre "The Chicken House" vale allo scrittore il Branford Boase Award 2003 e viene candidato nello stesso anno alla Carnegie Medal. La chiave di volta per comprendere i lavori di Brooks è certamente la passione che egli manifesta, sin da bambino, nei confronti del giallo e della detective story, che ben traspare anche nelle sue opere successive (da "Kissing the Rain" e "Bloodline" a "The Road of the Dead") e in tre dei suoi romanzi tradotti in italiano, in particolare l'angoscioso "Bunker Diary" - vincitore della Carnegie Medal 2014 - che ha come protagonista il sedicenne Linus e altre cinque persone intrappolate in un bunker claustrofobico, sotto l'egida e le torture dell'«uomo di sopra».
Kevin Brooks was born and grew up in Exeter. After leaving school, he moved to London to try to become a rock star. After working in a zoo, in a petrol station, in a hotdog place, in a crematorium and in a post office, he started doing what he could do best: writing children's books. He currently lives in York and is one of the most productive English authors of the 21st century, able to create fairy tales and noir short stories that become classics as soon as they are written. "Lucas" and "Martyn Pig", in 2002, established him in the publishing world, while with "The Chicken House" he won the Branford Boase Award 2003. In the same year, he was also nominated for the Carnegie Medal. The key to understand his works is indeed his life-long passion for crime and detective stories, characterizing his works such as "Kissing the Rain", "Bloodline", "The Road of the Dead" and three of his novels transited into Italian, particularly his harrowing "Bunker Diary", winner of the Carnegie Medal 2014.
