Attrice cinematografica originaria di Sturmer (Gran Bretagna), ha recitato per alcuni tra i massimi registi della seconda metà del Novecento, esordendo ancora giovanissima nella commedia di Richard Leister "Non tutti ce l'hanno" (1965). In seguito è stata diretta da autori del calibro di John Boorman, Patrick Chérau e molti altri, prestandosi a interpretare una notevole varietà di ruoli in pellicole dei generi più disparati. Dalla fine degli anni Sessanta il suo nome è legato anche a importanti produzioni cinematografiche italiane, a partire da un piccolo ruolo ne "La caduta degli dei" di Luchino Visconti (1969) per poi passare a lungometraggi come "Giordano Bruno" di Giuliano Montaldo (in cui recita accanto a Gian Maria Volonté), "Il portiere di notte" di Liliana Cavani (1974) - film di culto in cui riveste i panni di un'ebrea scampata ai campi di sterminio - e "Yuppi du" (1975), commedia musicale di cui è co-protagonista insieme ad Adriano Celentano. Negli anni Ottanta e Novanta la sua carriera non conosce battute d'arresto e si divide tra l'Europa e gli Stati Uniti, arricchendosi di ulteriori collaborazioni (tra le tante, spiccano quelle con Woody Allen, Sidney Lumet, Claude Lelouche, Nagisa Oshima, Jaques Deray e Alan Parker). Dopo il Duemila, complice anche il felice sodalizio con autori come François Ozon, la Rampling conosce una seconda giovinezza artistica e viene insignita di importanti riconoscimenti, tra cui un Premio César onorario (2001) e un European Film Award come migliore attrice per "Swimming Pool" (2003). Nel 2015 vince l'Orso d'argento al Festival di Berlino per la sua interpretazione nel film "45 anni", ruolo che le è valso anche un secondo European Award e la candidatura all'Oscar 2016 come migliore attrice protagonista.
Born in Sturmer in the United Kingdom, Charlotte Rampling has starred in films helmed by some of the greatest directors of the latter half of the twentieth century, making her debut when still very young in Richard Leister's comedy "The Knack ...and How to Get It" (1965). She was later directed by the likes of John Boorman, Patrick Chérau and many others, lending herself to interpreting a wide range of roles in films of all genres. Since the late 1960s, she has also been linked to some important Italian feature films, starting with a small role in "La caduta degli dei" by Luchino Visconti (1969) before moving on to featuring roles in "Giordano Bruno" by Giuliano Montaldo ( acting alongside Gian Maria Volonté), "Il portiere di notte" by Liliana Cavani (1974) - a cult film in which she plays the role of a Jewish woman who survived the death camps - and "Yuppi du" (1975), a musical comedy in which she co-starred with Adriano Celentano. In the 1980s and 90s, her career progressed successfully and she divided her time between Europe and the United States, collaborating with the likes of Woody Allen, Sidney Lumet, Claude Lelouche, Nagisa Oshima, Jaques Deray and Alan Parker, among others. Her accomplishments continued into the 2000s thanks to partnerships with the likes of François Ozon, and she was recognised with an honorary César Award (2001) and a European Film Award for best actress for "Swimming Pool" (2003). In 2015, she won the Silver Bear for best actress at the Berlin Festival for her performance in "45 years", a role that would see her win a second European Award and an Oscar nomination for best actress.
