Born in Manchester in 1959, Jeanette Winterson was adopted by a Pentecostal couple and grew up in the Lancashire countryside, surrounded by a few texts which would prove to be decisive: The Bible on one hand, "the most influential and formative book in my life"; on the other, "Le Morte d'Arthur" by Malory, a classic that marked her initiation to myth and fairytale. When she was 16, she fell in love with a girl of the same age and abandoned her adoptive family, living for some time in Mini undertaking a variety of jobs. The freedom of desire and imagination, as well as having a profound effect on her biography, is a poetic element that permeates some of her most popular books, such as "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit" (1985), winner of the Whitbread Prize, to the memoir "Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?" (2011). After studying at St. Catherine's College, Oxford, Winterson moved to London and thanks to the success of her first book - which was a big hit in independent bookshops before going on to conquer the press and readers - she started earning a living as a professional writer, finding extraordinary success with "The Passion" (1987), "Sexing the Cherry" (1989) and "Written on the Body" (1994). Since 1994, she has lived in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, surrounded by nature, and she has contributed to the major British newspapers; she also teaches New Writing at Manchester University. In 2015, she married the psychoanalyst and psychotherapist Susie Orbach, author of the classic "Fat is a Feminist Issue". Among her most recent novels translated into Italian are: "The Daylight Gate" (2014), set in England at the time of the gunpowder plot, and "The Gap of Time", (2015), a rewriting of William Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale".(photo: © Leonardo Cendamo)
