Autrice di quattro libri di poesia, sei romanzi e due opere di non-fiction, Helen Humphreys è un esponente di spicco della letteratura anglo-canadese contemporanea. Nata in Gran Bretagna a Kingston-on-Thames e trapiantata a Kingston, in Ontario, si è distinta agli occhi della critica anglofona sin dai tempi del suo romanzo d'esordio, "Leaving Heart", pubblicato nel 1997 e vincitore del Toronto Book Award 1998. Agli anni Ottanta e Novanta risale anche buona parte della sua opera poetica, che parte dalla raccolta "Gods and Other Mortals" (1986) e prosegue con "Nuns Looking Anxious, Listening to Radios" (1990), "The Perils of Geography" (1995), fino al più recente "Anthem" (1999), che nel 2000 è valso alla scrittrice il Canadian Authors Association Award for Poetry ed è stato selezionato dalla giuria del Pat Lowther Award come miglior libro di poesia dell'anno. Il suo secondo romanzo, "Afterimage", segnalato fra i dieci romanzi più significativi dell'anno dal "New York Times", si è aggiudicato il Rogers Writers Trust Fiction Prize. Nel 2002 la Humphreys pubblica "Il giardino perduto", un inno alla bellezza ambientato in Inghilterra durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, che è stato selezionato dalla Canadian Broadcasting Corporation e dal Canada Reads Selection. Nel 2008 è la volta di "Coventry", seguito nel 2011 da "The reinvention of love" ("La verità, soltanto la verità"), che ripercorre le tappe del sofferto legame tra il poeta Sainte-Beuve e Adele Hugo. Nel 2013 esce "Notturno", un testo dalle forti tinte autobiografiche legato alla drammatica scomparsa del fratello pianista.
Helen Humphreys, born in 1961 in London, is a Canadian author and poet. She published four collections of poems: "Nuns Looking Anxious", "Listening to the Radio", "The Perils of Geography" and "Anthem". This last book was chosen for the Pat Lowther Award as Best Book of Poetry and won the 2000 Canadian Authors Association Award for Poetry. In 1997 her novel "Leaving Earth" won the important City of Toronto Book Award. Her second novel "Afterimage" was chosen by the "New York Times" as one of the ten most important books of the year and won the Roger Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. "The Lost Garden" (2002) was chosen by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the Canada Reads Selection and "Coventry" (2008), it was at the top of the Canadian bestseller list for weeks. In 2009 Helen Humphreys won the prestigious Harbourfront Festival Prize.
