Since the poetic art of Tishani Doshi is deeply tied to the practice of dance, it is not by chance that her first collection of poetry with which she won in 2006 the Forward Poetry Prize for the best collection from a newcomer is titled "Countries of the Body". For Doshi the body is the receptacle of joy and divinity, and the artistic performance of the dancer tends to perfection. But it is in the order of things that this harmony is dissipated: thus the poetry becomes the place of research for another body able to be host to its own heart and mind. Il titolo dell'evento è "A city of women", e protagoniste sono le intense poesie dell'indiana Tishani Doshi, presentata da Gioia Guerzoni. L'incontro, che si svolge senza l'ausilio dell'interprete, diventa ben presto un reading, che permette al pubblico di avvicinarsi all'opera della Doshi tramite la lettura da parte dell'autrice stessa. Poeta, scrittrice e ballerina, la Doshi ammette di preferire l'ultima delle tre attività in quanto più fisica ed immediata, che permette uno scambio di energia con il pubblico. Seconda viene poi la poesia ed infine la scrittura di prosa, che richiede una continuità a volte impegnativa, e che comunque resta più distante dal lettore anche solo per un mero motivo di tempistica, in quanto passa spesso molto tempo dal momento della scrittura alla pubblicazione. Le poesie della Doshi affrontano spesso temi sociali e di attualità, e hanno al centro figure di donne, anche molto diverse tra loro come ad esempio la madre o la «strana» donna che sceglie di non avere figli né sposarsi. Il pubblico, dato il lungo applauso finale, premia la giovane autrice per l'intensità e la potenza dei suoi versi, che aprono una finestra su un mondo agli antipodi di quello che conosciamo.
