Gcina Mhlophe è nata a Durban, in Sudafrica, nel 1958 e vive a Johannesburg. Dopo gli studi di giornalismo alla Rhodes University, ha iniziato a lavorare per radio e riviste, decidendo poi di dedicarsi alla recitazione e alla scrittura creativa. Attrice molto nota nel suo Paese, è anche drammaturga e poetessa e autrice di storie per bambini Nel 1989 è uscito "The Snake with Seven Heads", opera per bambini che le ha permesso di ricevere diversi premi e una certa notorietà. Recita regolarmente presso il Market Theatre di Johannesburg dove è stata direttore artistico nel 1989 e nel 1990. La sua commedia "Have you seen Zandile?" ha ottenuto un successo internazionale ed è stata rappresentata in Sudafrica e all'estero, con Gcina Mhlophe nel ruolo principale. Un successo testimoniato dalla quantità e qualità dei premi ricevuti, tra cui il Fringe First Award a Edimburgo. Mhlophe lega la sua fama anche all'attività di performer e storyteller, un'attività che le deriva dall'esposizione durante l'infanzia all'arte del racconto orale da parte della nonna. Ha ricevuto un dottorato Honoris Causa dalla Open University di Londra e uno dalla University of Natal in Sudafrica. Nel 2004 è stato ripubblicato "Love Child", raccolta di racconti e poesie che ripercorrono la storia del Sudafrica dagli anni ottanta alla fine dell'apartheid.
Gcina Mhlophe was born in Durban, South Africa in 1958 and lives in Johannesburg. After her studies in journalism at Rhodes University, she started collaborating for the radio and magazines, deciding to devote herself to acting and creative writing. A very well known actress in her Country, she is also a poet and playwright and an author of children's books. In 1989 her "The Snake with Seven Heads" was published, a children's book which won her several prizes. She regularly acts at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg where she was art director in 1989 and 1990. Her play "Have you Seen Zandile?" was met with international success and was performed in South Africa and abroad, with Gcina Mhlplhe starring in the main role. The play won many prizes including the Fringe First Award in Edimburgh. Mhlophe is also a famous performer and storyteller. She also received a honoris causa degree from the Open University in London and one by the University of Natal in South Africa. In 2004 her "Love Child" was republished, a collection of stories and poems going through the history of South Africa from the 80s till the end of Apartheid.
