Insignito del titolo di Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, dal 1999 è Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.(foto: © Festivaletteratura)
Anthony Beevor is one of the world's leading historians. Raised in a literary family, he studied at Winchester and Sandhurst, where he was a student of John Keegan, the most renowned English WWII historian. Before leaving the army and working full-time as a journalist, he served as a Hussar officer. His most famous works, translated into many languages, have given life to the study of certain key episodes from the Second World War, starting with "Stalingrad" (1998), which won the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Wolson Prize for History and Hawthornen Prize for Literature in 1999. "Berlin: the Downfall 1945" was released four years later, triggering fierce historical debate on the last days of the Third Reich and, equally, on the war crimes committed by the Red Army. Equally important is "The Spanish Civil War" (2005), a work in which Beevor used Soviet and Spanish sources that were hitherto unavailable. Captivating storytelling and the mass of previous unpublished documents also characterise his later works, including "D-Day: The Battle for Normandy" and "Ardennes 1944", the latter a gripping tale of the last, bloody Nazi counter-offensive on the Western front. He has been awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and since 1999 he has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.(photo: © Festivaletteratura)
